Cleaning and care instructions
Your headwear, just like you, is a piece of character that likes to show itself in its best light in society. Like you, it requires regular and meticulous maintenance to maintain its shape and shine over time.
To help you clean your headgear and thus prolong your great love affair with it, here are some valuable tips to follow with your eyes closed.
Above all, avoid leaving your hat lying around on the rear shelf of your vehicle or in a place where the light shines directly because the natural fibers suffer from too much radiation, the materials dry out, the colors tarnish, your hat becomes deformed.
Above all, it is a question of clearly differentiating the materials as for clothing in order to respect the nature of each.
Take special care to dust off your felt hat to complete your outfit in the most elegant way. Use a soft brush with gentle bristles and brush delicately in a counterclockwise direction.
If you notice a stain, using “terre de Sommières” will naturally maintain the felt’s qualities (breathability, waterproofing, flexibility, etc.). We recommend using only natural products. Terre de Sommières is very effective in cleaning and removing grease and sweat stains from a hat. You can use water and gently rub; if the stain persists, add a bit of Marseille soap or a mild soap and rub again in a circular motion counterclockwise. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry at room temperature.
When ironing, use a damp cloth to avoid burning the wool and preventing shine on the felt (wool setting on the iron). Be very careful!
The genuine Panama hat is made from a type of palm (Carludovica Palmata—this plant belongs to the Cyclanthaceae family and is also known as “Panama straw” due to its use in crafting these iconic hats) that thrives in its natural habitat with 90% humidity. Therefore, during the warm days, remember to regularly mist it with a spray bottle, or the fibers may crack.
A meticulous brushing to remove any trace of dust is always beneficial. To remove a possible stain, use a slightly damp cotton cloth and proceed with delicate motions. Finally, for a refined finishing touch, a light ironing at a low temperature, ideally on the wool setting, will refresh the hat. Take care to iron the edges carefully in circular motions, avoiding prolonged focus on one spot for the best results.
Given the delicate nature of waxed cotton, dusting or light cleaning with a sponge is usually sufficient for the outer part. To restore a newer look, you can opt for hand washing in a basin of soapy water, followed by rinsing and air drying. Then, to maintain its waterproofing and shine, applying a special wax for waxed cotton garments is recommended. However, avoid ironing if the seams are waterproof, as heat could alter the technical features of the hat.
For materials that require minimal maintenance, such as cotton, hand washing with water and soap is recommended. Let your hat soak overnight if stains persist. Be cautious with brightly colored prints, such as red, which could bleed onto other parts during washing.
To preserve the quality of your garment, machine washing is suitable at a maximum temperature of 30°C, using a delicate cycle. However, set the spin cycle to a maximum of 800 rpm. For fleece, it’s best to wash it inside out and let it air dry, avoiding the dryer. If necessary, you can iron at a low temperature, up to 110°C, for optimal results.
To care for your hemp cap with elegance, use Marseille soap with a soft brush or cloth. For stubborn stains, a touch of baking soda can be added for a deeper clean. For the inner band, feel free to be more vigorous in hand washing to maintain the cap’s quality. After washing, gently wring out the cap with a soft cloth, then let it air dry naturally to preserve its luster.
Whether it’s a straw, felt, wool, or fabric hat, it is recommended, especially if they’ve gotten wet, to store them upside down. This method preserves their shape and quality, ensuring their longevity and timeless elegance.
